2024 Emmy Reel for Overall Excellence
We could not be prouder to announce that the Seattle Channel won the Overall Excellence award at the 62nd annual Northwest Regional Emmy Awards this past weekend! It’s the first time the channel has earned the prestigious honor, which recognizes the quality, variety, and impact of an organization’s storytelling.
The team accepted the top award to a standing ovation from local journalists on Saturday, June 7, at the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Emmy Awards ceremony.
Producer Annabel Cassam and photographer/editor Pete Cassam took home an additional Emmy in the Human Interest category for feature “A Way of Connecting – Representational Painter Michael Stasinos.” It spotlights the artist’s unique ability to connect with passersby and the city itself. His process en plein air offers a loving view of Seattle, painted from its own sidewalks.
“We are honored to have such talented journalists, producers, editors, and videographers working with the Seattle Channel and sharing our culture, stories, and city business in a unique way,” said Mayor Bruce Harrell. “I congratulate the staff of the Seattle Channel for their Overall Excellence win. Their work puts our One Seattle spirit of community values, connectedness, and support for our neighbors and local businesses onto the screen for us to watch and enjoy.”
“Telling the stories of our community isn’t something that often makes mainstream news. The Seattle Channel takes the opportunity to dive deeper into the heart of the matter to truly make an impact in the world of journalism,” said Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth, Chair of the Parks, Public Utilities, and Technology Committee. “Congratulations to the award-winning journalists and the rest of the team for their continual dedication to our city.”
Seattle Channel competed against commercial and public television stations and other media networks and organizations in the Northwest NATAS five-state region, which includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. All awards in this 62nd annual Northwest Emmy Awards were for work completed between January 1 and December 31, 2024.
“For decades, Seattle Channel has been a trusted daily window into our city’s government, history, and communities. Their win of the top Overall Excellence award, along with the Emmy wins, affirms this legacy,” said Seattle’s Chief Technology Officer, Rob Lloyd. “To be honored by one’s industry is a testament to the respect the team carries in the profession, as well as the team’s connection with the people of Seattle. Congratulations to our Seattle Channel team members and partners! You make us all proud in the spirit of One Seattle.”
This year, the municipal TV station received 11 nominations across a wide range of program categories, including health/medical, environment/science, historical/cultural, and human interest.
“The nominations and wins show the creativity and care the team gives to the city and community that means so much to them,” said Seattle Channel General Manager Shannon Gee. “To have received the Overall Excellence award for our Pacific Northwest region is beyond an honor and recognizes what Seattle Channel has built over all these years. To say I’m proud of the Seattle Channel is the understatement of the decade.”
