Broadband Battle? on City Inside/Out

In this year’s “State-of-the-City” speech, Mayor Mike McGinn renewed his call to create a citywide broadband network to carry data at lightning speeds. McGinn says investing in broadband will lead to economic development. Others wonder if the nearly $800 million infrastructure project is worth the cost, especially since there are already other telecommunications’ providers in the city. This week, City Inside/Out examines the debate over broadband.

Why does Seattle need to build a broadband network? If the city does need it, why isn’t private industry providing it? What will broadband provide to households that they don’t already have? How much will it cost? How will Seattle pay for it?

First, we visit Tacoma, which has already built its own broadband network called Click!. Public Health’s Funding Crisis on City Inside/Out

To help close the state’s $4.6 billion budget gap, Governor Chris Gregoire has proposed deep cuts in funding for public health. Public Health — Seattle & King County will soon have to slash health services for thousands of vulnerable people. Low-income mothers and babies will likely be hard hit, as will poor adults needing medical and dental care. Over one hundred healthcare workers have already received layoff notices. This week on City Inside/Out, host C.R. Douglas asks: Are there ways to cushion the coming blow? Can the county’s public health system become more efficient? Will the state lose federal funding because of these cuts?

Seattle Streets on City Inside/Out

Since December’s snowstorm, potholes have opened up in streets across the city. The Seattle Department of Transportation says there are usually around 200 potholes waiting to be filled; right now the backlog is nearly 1,000. This week, City Inside/Out takes a look at how the city is scrambling to catch up with street maintenance projects. Are we neglecting our transportation infrastructure? Does the transportation system need more money? If so, what kind of taxes: Higher car tabs? Higher parking rates? Or is City Hall focusing on the wrong problems? Are the politicians paying for major projects and neglecting neighborhood streets? To get answers, host C.R. Many people think there’s a rise in flooding in Seattle and across Western Washington. Has the rainfall really increased? If so, what’s causing it? Is climate change impacting local weather? State Legislature Preview on City Inside/Out

A new session of the state Legislature begins this month with a familiar problem: Washington state has a $4.6 billion budget hole. Governor Christine Gregoire, responding to voter sentiment, has proposed an all-cuts budget with no tax increases. Her budget cuts deeply into human services, health care and education. Will lawmakers go for her plan or come up with an alternative? How will statewide cutbacks affect Seattle?

On Friday, January 7, City Inside/Out‘s C.R. Douglas interviews three legislators from the Emerald City to get their thoughts on the upcoming legislative session. Our guests are northeast Seattle’s state Senator Scott White, southeast Seattle’s state Representative Eric Pettigrew and northwest Seattle’s state Representative Reuven Carlyle. In addition to the budget crisis, we’ll ask legislators about vital transportation issues such as funding problems at King County Metro Transit and paying for any cost overruns for the replacement of the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
