The Gregory Awards were incredible!
Nancy and I chat about some of the highlights on this week’s Art Zone episode.
It was so inspiring seeing so many generations of theatre people all in one place! I loved the fact that theatre artists and patrons from the most established companies in the region like The Seattle Repertory Theatre and Village were mingling with people from the newest companies like Balagan and Contemporary Classics to diverse groups like Pork Filled Players. The energy was palpable!

So what great shows are coming up that might be nominated this next year? My bets are on Hamlet running through December 5 at Seattle Shakespeare. Directed by last year’s Gregory award recipient for Outstanding Director, Mr. John Langs, if this production is anything like his other local productions, you better get your tickets now! His visual sensibility, precise pacing and talent for pulling out the most powerfully moving performances have never been short of absolutely riveting. Don’t miss it.

Speaking of new companies, the newest to open their doors is Azeotrope Theatre with their production of Red Light Winter running through November 13.
Featuring design work from a couple of this year’s Gregory Award recipients (Andrew D. Smith and Andrea Bryn Bush), this intimate play explores the intangible aspects of relationships in a deeply visceral way laced with humor. Be aware that there are visually provocative scenes that are that much more gut-wrenching when seen live on stage (yes, that means full nudity and overt sexual content). The nuanced work of the cast and artists involved shows great promise for this fledgling company. And while not a perfect play, in many ways the script is as vulnerable and cocky, messy and awkward, tender and risky as real life relationships are. Like our memories of unrequited loves, there are moments in the play that will linger long after you thought you’d moved on.

Get out and see some theatre!
Kathy
