SEATTLE CHANNEL, Town Hall and CityClub have created Seattle Speaks, a series of unique, multi-media town halls for the 21st century, to use TV and the web for spirited debate on public issues. The next episode will focus on the debate over marijuana policy.
THE BACKGROUND: Washington state is having an exciting conversation about marijuana. During this year’s legislative session, elected officials introduced bills both to legalize and decriminalize pot. None were passed. Signature gathering is underway for a citizen’s initiative that would allow the adult possession, cultivation and use – medical or otherwise – of marijuana. How do you think we should regulate marijuana? Will you sign the initiative?
In March, a medical marijuana grower in Kirkland stopped a home invasion by shooting the would-be robbers. Do you think there are public safety concerns associated with decriminalizing or legalizing marijuana? Are these offset by the lowered costs from reduced law enforcement and potential new money from tax collections?
THE FORMAT: Using cutting edge technology both the studio and online audience will participate in real-time conversation using people meters, testimonials, email and social media including Twitter and Facebook. To stimulate this discussion, we’ve invited special guests including an anti-drug crusader who lost his son to an overdose, passionate marijuana activists, Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes, State Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles and ACLU-WA Drug Policy Director Alison Holcomb. SEATTLE CHANNEL’s dynamic public affairs host C.R. Douglas will lead the lively exchanges.
